Nasal Breathing and the Bhramari

The Bhramari is the Bee Breath.

The term Bhramari comes from the ancient Sanskrit language and refers to the black bumblebee found in India. Specifically, Bhramari is a form of pranayama, or breathwork, that mimics the sound of a bee humming while exhaling. Many refer to Bhramari as “Bee Breath” due to the similarity of the buzzing sound of the bumblebee.

Practicing the Bhramari has Physiological Benefits.

Studies demonstrate that practicing the Bhramari can help to lower blood pressure and heart rate by activating the parasympathetic nervous system and maintaining its dominance over the sympathetic nervous system. Additionally, A Bhramari practice is beneficial in clearing the nasal passages and alleviating the effects of sinus conditions.

Practicing the Bhramari has Cognitive Benefits.

The Bhramari was developed to help to calm the mind and release negative emotions. Practicing the Bhramari can help the practitioner turn inwards, reducing the effects of external stimuli and acting as a bridge to deep meditation. Studies have also demonstrated that the Bhramari practice improves concentration and cognitive function. It can also provide immediate relief from agitation, anger, and anxiety.

Bhramari Practice Basics

  • Come to a comfortable position; seated, standing, or lying(to alleviate insomnia).

  • Plug your ears with your index fingers. This helps to focus and can be optional.

  • Inhale slowly, through the nose.

  • Exhale slowly, through the nose in a controlled manner while making a soft humming sound (hmmmm).

  • Practice making the humming sound the entire length of the exhale.

  • This is one round. Continue for 6-10 rounds to start.

  • Focus on feeling the vibration of the sound in your jaw, face and neck to as far as the sensation extends.

  • Practice keeping your jaw and tongue relaxed.
